    1. Excellent!! Glad this is proving helpful.
If you don’t mind, please share this page on Facebook or Twitter to spread the word. 🙂

    1. Karl – Can you elaborate? What type of purchase did you try to make? Did it maybe require the card security code?

      1. I just got approved for thr CSR today. I tried this trick on amazon to add $1 to my amazon gift card and it was declined? Any suggestionsm

        1. Hi Ron,

What did you use for expiration date? If you didn’t already use your approval month + 3 years, which would be January 2020 in your case, retry it on Amazon with that expiration date.

          1. I tried both 3 years and 4 years, both times declined? Is there a time between approval and card activation or something?

  1. Anyone had any luck with Delta or American changing the card used after booking? I just applied for the CSR and want to use that $300 2016 reimbursement on a flight this Friday, but doubt I’ll get the card in time for it. Was wondering if I could charge another credit card, then call and have them change the card used once I receive the CSR (like you mentioned as a last resort).

    1. Hi Brooks,

Check out my recent post on the Chase Sapphire Reserve (CSR) travel credit. If you just got the CSR in mid to late December your first statement will probably be in January. If that’s the case then any spending you do near term will count toward the 2017 annual credit. Then after your December 2017 statement closes you’ll be eligible for 2018 travel credit. Hope that helps. If it’s confusing, let me know and I’ll try to explain further.

  2. This was all great info., however, The bills and services I wanted to use the credit card with all required the 3 digit security code/CVV. Thank you!

  3. I just used this trick to make an Amazon purchase and I just got an email stating my Amazon account is now locked due to incorrect billing address. I used the same billing information that’s on my online account. Maybe it’s because you have to call a number to activate the card once you get it? Anyway, you might want to wait until your card comes so you don’t risk getting locked out of your account.

  4. Hey, this was a nifty trick. I used the product code as the CVC # and it allowed me to book the flight. Have reservation # in my email. I’m a little concerned I’ll get a “payment declined” any sec now or something but your method worked. Thanks for this site.

    1. Since you tried 2022 already, try 2021 or even 2020. When I received my card the expiration year (2019) was 3 years from the year of approval (2016).

  5. Honeymoon Guy, the info you provided here is brilliant! I applied and was approved for a Southwest Rapids Rewards Plus card for 50,000 points and was approved online in seconds. My wife and I are in the process of remodeling our home and wanted to charge things like granite slabs, hardwood flooring, etc in order to quickly reach our $2,000 purchase requirement to activate our points.

I went through the steps you laid out, although Chase has recently updated their site and some things look different now, I was able to send the Secure Message, get the account number and make an initial purchase on Amazon to test the number. My first attempt using a 5 year experation date of 2/2022 was declined. I update the payment method and tried 2/2021 ( 4 years from approval date) and it went through!

I then called in the payment information to the granite supplier and even told them that I had been approved for a new card and didn’t have the 3 diget code yet, but gave then the account number and the 2/2021 experation, billing address and zip. The salesman then said it all went through…you are good to go!

I then check my Chase account and low and behold there the pending charge was and we now only need less than $1,000 more in purchases to get our 50,000 rewards points! Sorry for the long post, but someone else may be incouraged to try your recommendation because it sure worked for us!

    50,000 thanks to you!

    1. Thank you so much for the kind words, Fitz! I’m so glad you were able to take advantage of this trick! And thank you for sharing the specific details of your situation. Congrats on getting the Southwest card.

  6. Is there a way I can still get the account number without having a Chase account already? I can’t seem to create a log-in without my account number…. We need to pay for our season tickets for the Colts on Monday and would like to use our new Southwest card to quickly hit our 2,000 so we can get our 50,000 points!

    1. Hi Becky!
It might be worth calling Chase to see if they can get an online account set up for you. Not sure they’ll do so over the phone but it’s worth a shot.

  7. Wasn’t able to get it to work, got the card number but keep getting declined for expiration. I’ve tried 2020 and 2020 as of today when I got the card approved.

  8. Hi Nick,

If those are the 3-year and 5-year days, might as well try the 4-year date (2021). Hope you get it to work!

  9. Hi! Got the card today and tried 2020, 2021, and 2022 for expiration dates and got declined for all 3. Is there a time lapse when you can use the number?

  10. I just tried this and it worked. I charged $1 on my Amazon balance. Now I’m hoping this will work for some major car repairs I need today.

    1. Just to update: I tried the card number at the auto repair shop this morning and it worked! Thanks for the great tip. It made an unexpected large auto repair bill more tolerable knowing I could put it towards the minimum spend on a bonus miles card I haven’t received yet!

  11. So close! Great trick, thank you. I was able to get my card number on the app. However, I haven’t been successful in reloading my amazon gift card balance. I’ve tried 3, 4, and 5 year out expiration dates, and both with/without middle initial. Cannot get it to go through!

  12. As of mid-June 2017, this trick still works (nice catch on the five year expiration time update too!) I put my card to be expired 5 years from now and made a $300 purchase on Amazon. Amazon is great. LOL

  13. For those that are stating they can’t see the full account number, I had the same issue on my actual laptop. I was not able to see the full account number. But, if you look on your mobile app, just like the instructions, you can see the full account number on the app.

  14. I’m trying to do this with a high school checking account to order a pair of Levi’s that are on sale before the card arrives, so I can get the 40% off deal before it expires, before the physical card arrives in the mail. I did the whole trick but when I go to my sent messages my account number is only 9 digits instead of 16, and I know it now but it’s not long enough to use. Is that normal?

Everyone else’s card number: XXXX XXXX XXXX 0000
    My number: XXXX XXXX 0

  15. Was able to use your trick to find the account number of a new Chase Ink Preferred Business card, but my attempts at the $1 with Amazon all failed. I tried 2, 3 and 5 years out (the 2 was a mistake). The last attempt was immediately canceled, making me wonder if my account was about to get locked out from suspicious activity.

Is the default expiration year count different on the business cards? An Ink Plus card from a year ago had a 3 year expiration to the month.

  16. I just tried this with 3, 4, and 5 years expiration date but without success. I’m wondering if maybe the card has to activated? I will try again tomorrow since I just got approved a few hours ago.

    1. Please let us know if it works for you tomorrow. I suspect that it may take some short amount of time for the card account to become active in Chase’s system and that’s why this trick hasn’t worked for a few people but has worked for almost everyone. Good luck!

  17. This is great!! Thank you for being much smarter than me! I was able to use this make a purchase and get Mubarak air miles. Very cool

  18. This worked flawlessly. Need to purchase some items before a sale ended and I needed my card before it got here. And I found something out for the CVV, if you have PayPal you can try numbers 000-999 until it works, it worked for me. Let me know what you think and thank you very much.

    1. Jgrubb – Send the secure message using a computer and then go to the Chase app on your smartphone to view the sent msg.

  19. I tried this and everything worked using an expiration 5 years in the future. I am curious though, how did you input an expiration that ended up being incorrect and still worked?

    1. Ryan – That’s great news! Glad it worked for you.

I was also surprised that it worked for me with the expiration date off by a year. Perhaps Amazon’s credit card processing system at that time was lenient in that regard.

  20. It worked for me! Thanks for your help! Was heading out of town and needed to make a purchase and this helped so much. I also was a 5 year expiration.

  21. DANG! about to make airline purchase, but it requires CVV. Everything else worked a treat! great tip, Friend.

PS – I was also 3 years for the expiration date.

  22. This worked!! Thank you! And by the way, in the sent message box where the account number is, it also lists the CVV! It is listed as the “product code”.

At least that is what I entered and it went through as well as popped up on my transactions on my chase account. =]
