American Airlines is running a Miles for Milestones promotion to celebrate 35 years of their AAdvantage program.
Simply selecting a “milestone” when signing up for the chance to win 350,000 AAdvantage miles will get you 350 miles free. If you also share the offer on Facebook, Twitter or via email you’ll get another 350 free miles.
Per my latest valuations, AAdvantage miles are worth about 1.5 cents each, so I value the 700 miles I received from this promo at about $10.
However, there’s another, sometimes more valuable, benefit to promos such as this: The addition of miles to a frequent flyer account will usually push out any expiration of miles in your account.
From American Airlines’ FAQ:
Just earn or redeem miles on American or with an AAdvantage partner at least once every 18 months. We’ll automatically extend your mileage expiration date 18 months from the date of your most recent activity.
How to Get the Free AAdvantage Miles
If you’re interested in grabbing 700 AAdvantage miles, head on over to the AA promo site. Scroll down until you see the entry form, shown here:
Enter your info, including the milestone info and click/tap the Register now button. I entered my birthday month. I figured American Airlines already has that info so I’m not providing any new personal details to them.
You should then see this confirmation screen, with the opportunity to share to get another 350 miles.
I shared the message on my twitter feed…

I entered my AAdvantage account number and Twitter username and got the following confirmation…
That’s all there was to it! It probably took less than five minutes total. Go get those miles!
