Free, Easy 1,000 American Airlines Miles

American Airlines has a promotion active now until 12 June 2015 that yields you 1,000 free AAdvantage Miles for watching six short (about 1 minute) videos and answering a simple question on each video.

You can even fast forward through the videos and answer the questions directly if you’re really impatient.  And you don’t even have to get the answers correct to earn the points!

I value American Airlines miles at 1.5 to 2.0 cents each so your return on five minutes of your time is about $15 to $20 worth of miles.  Promotions like this are especially beneficial if you’re a few miles away from an award threshold or you’re looking for a way to keep miles active (miles expire after 18 months of inactivity).

After you complete the “course” be sure to register by clicking the “Register” button before you leave the site.  That’s a necessary step to get the 1,000 miles credited to your AAdvantage account.  The fine print indicates the miles will post 6-8 weeks after the promotion ends.  That equates to late July or early August though I wouldn’t be surprised to see them post sooner.

  1. airline tarvel is 20% less.. and AMEX but, I have United club card so I get free bags do you book tarvel with Chase or AMEX for the 20% discount.. and is it really. AND When you buy United Tickets they always offer you more miles for an additional price. Am I supposed to take that or no? Do those miles count for miles in the seat or just bought miles.. I’m so confused and can’t wait till FTU just to ask a million questions I think it’s going to be overwhelming. Thanks

  2. Hi Yulduz,
To answer one of your questions (I’m not sure I understand all of your comment):

“When you buy United Tickets they always offer you more miles for an additional price. Am I supposed to take that or no?”

Generally, when an airline is selling you miles it is not a great deal for you as the buyer. There can be a few exceptions such as when an airline offers a huge bonus such as buy x miles and get another x miles free. The key is to understand how much a mile is worth. Of course the value of a mile is different in different airlines’ programs. I value United MileagePlus miles at about 1.8 cents each. If you can buy them for much less than that and have an envisioned near-term use for them, then it’s worth purchasing IMO.

The other time that it can be sensible to purchase miles is if you’re a small number away from an award threshold and have no other great way to get that last small number of miles you need. For example, if you’re wanting an award ticket that costs 60k miles but you only have 58,000 miles it may be worth purchasing 2,000 miles to get you the award ticket versus paying for the flight completely out of pocket.

For reference, I don’t think I’ve ever purchased airline miles.
