In my Ultimate, Definitive Review of the Chase Sapphire Reserve I raved about the card’s 100,000 Ultimate Rewards points signup bonus. Well, that signup bonus is dropping soon, and in a major way.
It will plummet from 100k points to 50k points. The drop is coming first to online applications, taking effect on 12 January 2017. The full 100k signup bonus will still apparently be available in branches until 11 March 2017 though.
There is no question this is a massive change. It drops the signup bonus from being worth over $2,000 in my estimation to being worth around $1,000. That’s a dramatic drop.
I would highly recommend that anyone considering getting this card in the near future, apply for it now or apply for it in branch in the next two months. It would be absolutely brutal to miss the cutoffs by a day or two and lose out on a thousand dollars of value.
An important reminder: The determining factor as to which bonus you get for a credit card is based on the offer for which you apply and the date of your application. So if you apply for the 100,000 point offer online before 12 January 2017 but don’t get approved until after 11 January 2017 you’ll still get the 100,000 point bonus.
I’ve had the card as my #1 travel card for several months now (and that’s unbiased as I don’t receive any payment for referring people to the card). The card’s “King of the Hill” status may very well change though once this bonus change goes into effect.
